Stefaniensaal
The Stefaniensaal (also: Stephaniensaal) is one of the most traditional concert and event halls in Graz, designed by the architect Mathias Seidl in the building of the Steiermärkische Sparkasse, built between 1883 and 1885. The hall, named after Crown Princess Stephanie of Belgium, was opened on November 4, 1885 with a festive concert at which, among others, the conductor Karl Muck and the court opera singer Marie Wilt performed.[1][Note. 1]
Between 1905 and 1908 the hall was enlarged under the direction of the architect Leopold Theyer and a representative staircase with a glass dome was built. The interior was furnished by the Viennese sculptor Johannes Benk and other well-known artists.
The hall is now part of the Graz Congress Center (Congress Graz), which with 19 event rooms with a total area of 2900 m² and a capacity of up to 2400 people and its central location next to the Graz main square is one of the most important event locations in the Styrian capital. In concert seating, the Stefaniensaal offers space for around 1050 people.
Due to its magnificent furnishings and excellent acoustics, the hall is one of the permanent performance venues of the Styriarte and the Musikverein für Steiermark.
