January 1970

Charming German tenor Jonas Kaufmann returns to the Slovene capital following last year’s astonishing Ljubljana Festival debut. The opera singer and recitalist is famous for his outstanding technique and is often referred to as the “king of tenors”, or placed on a par with legendary German tenor Fritz Wunderlich. Kaufmann is also praised for his ability to completely immerse himself into the role he is playing. He is equally at home in the leading roles of the German, French and Italian operatic repertoire and the intimate settings of German Lieder. Soon after finishing his studies in Munich, he began performing at major opera houses and festivals. He made his Salzburg Festival debut in 1999 and in 2001 joined the Zurich Opera, where he began his international career. This was followed by performances in the most prestigious opera houses theatres and concert halls around the world – he made his US debut in Chicago in 2001, debuted at the Royal Opera House in London in 2004 and in 2006 sang the role of Alfredo in Verdi’s La traviata at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
At this year’s concert he will again be accompanied by the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra under Jochen Rieder, a German conductor who enjoys a long-standing and intense musical friendship with Kaufmann that has seen them perform together in venues ranging from the Barbican Centre in London to the Sydney Opera House in Australia and from the Seoul Arts Centre in South Korea to Carnegie Hall in New York, and continues to this day with dazzling international success.
