Souls Lovers

This evening’s program centers on arias and madrigals, under the title Anime amanti, composed between the late 1500s and early 1600s. These significant compositions, sung by the soprano Roberta Mameli accompanied by Luca Pianca on the archilute, are by outstanding composers of the years between the Renaissance and the Baroque period. They include Giulio Caccini, Claudio Monteverdi, Sigismondo D’India and Barbara Strozzi. The baroque rhetoric is highlighted by their thoughtful treatment of the texts, using the recitarcantando technique, a style widely employed because it lent itself perfectly to the ‘theory of affects’ much in vogue at the time. Then came the seconda prattica adopted by Monteverdi, whose innovations permeated a large part of the Italian 1600s.

This program offers a unique opportunity to hear some genuine pearls, such as the much loved Lamento di Arianna, a piece that marks one of the most inspired seasons in the whole history of music.
