The Kantor in France and Hungary

Akiko Suwanai is one of today’s most authoritative violinists. Her Stresa Festival program includes two of Bach’s concerts for solo violin, on 4 and 6 September in the series entitled Bach, our contemporary. This offers an intriguing comparison between one of the masterpieces of violin music of all times – Bach’s Sonata no. 1 and the Partite 1, 2, 3 – and some equally convincing 20th century compositions. The first evening’s concert puts Bartok’s well-known Sonata next to André Jolivet’s Incantation. The second evening will give us a Sonata by Ervin Schuloff, a Czech composer who was a victim of the Holocaust, paired with l’Etude♯3 by the Argentinian Astor Piazzolla.

Both concerts are scheduled in the breath-taking cliffside setting of the Eremo di Santa Caterina del Sasso, an exclusive treasure opened specially for the occasion – ideal for meditating on the enjoyment of the two evenings.

The Hermitage Santa Caterina del Sasso is located in Leggiuno and is a property of the Varese province. Situated on a rock rising straight from the deep waters of Lake Maggiore, the Hermitage is a spectacular monastery built starting from 13th century. The concert is held inside the Hermitage church. It is reached for the concert thanks to a boat organized on the occasion by the Festival, leaving Stresa main pier.
