The goddess Athena takes revenge on the valiant Ajax, who had proudly refused divine aid in battle, and clouds his mind. Ajax boasts of having massacred the Atrides, while he has slaughtered cattle; Odysseus feels pity for him and Athena mocks him. Soon the hero comes to his senses and realizes the reality and the ridiculous. Neither the sailors of Salamis, nor the concubine Tecmessa, nor the embrace of his little son distract him from suicide, which he commits by moving away and deceiving everyone. The last part of the tragedy is a discussion between the Atrides, who deny Ajax an honorable burial, and Ulysses with Teucer, who demands it and prevails. (440 BC)
