The first encounter between the RAI National Symphony Orchestra and Kirill Petrenko—the Russian-born, Austrian-naturalized conductor who has led the Berliner Philharmoniker since 2019—dates back to 2001, with an unforgettable performance of Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier. In the concerts that followed, his programming choices have never been banal or predictable. For this eighth collaboration, Petrenko presents, in the first half, Beethoven’s most unjustly overlooked symphony, the Second; in the finale, the blazing, erotically charged soundscapes of Bartók’s concert suite The Miraculous Mandarin.
