PLOT

In Susa, the capital of the Persian Empire, the old dignitaries who remained to lead the kingdom are inhabited by anguish: the great king, Sxyses, has long since left at the head of a huge expedition against Athens and has not yet returned. The anxiety about the outcome of the war grows when Atossa, the king's mother, reports on a prophetic dream, which showed her her son who fell into the dust at the hands of a filly of Greek origin. Soon the anguish turns into reality: one of the few survivors arrives in Susa and reports on the route of the Persian army off Salamina - the fleet of Xerxes, too large, was encirled by the ships of Athens, and the Persian army was massacred. In terror, Atossa and the Choir recall from Hade the soul of the deceased father of Syrses, Darius. Finally, the same Serses arrives in Susa: humiliated, the clothes torn, the great king sings the funeral lament for the young Persians who have fallen.
