The Lady of the Lake (La donna del lago) is a romantic opera in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, premiered in 1819. Set in the Scottish Highlands, the story follows Elena, a young woman torn between love, loyalty, and political conflict. As King James V disguises himself to win her affection, Elena remains devoted to Malcolm, while her father seeks to secure her future through a political marriage. Inspired by Sir Walter Scott’s poem, the opera combines lyrical beauty, dramatic tension, and virtuosic vocal performances, exploring the timeless themes of love, freedom, and the conflict between personal desire and duty.
